John McDonough enlisted with the 7th New Jersey Volunteers, Company K on Dec. 22, 1863 on a 3 year enlistment. He was wounded in the battle of Spotsylvania in Virigina, and died of his wounds at the Mt. Pleasant US Army General Hospital in Washington DC on May 26, 1864. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, VA.
