Charles & Jabez Beers were both members of the 7th New Jersey Volunteers.

Charles was recruited on August 18, 1862 and appears in Pvt. Emmell’s diaries after the battle of Gettysburg. Charles was shot in the leg on July 2nd, and is described in Emmell’s diary as “leg amputated and has since died” in the July 31, 1863 entry. Obituary records delineate his death as July 6, 1863. Based on this date and the entry in Emmell’s diary, we surmise that Beers died of complications or infection from his amputation. He was 31 years old.

Jabez was recruited on January 28, 1864, and according to records, was shot in action before Petersburg, Virginia. He died from his wounds in a field hospital on June 17, 1864. He was 19 years old.

Both Charles and Jabez are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Morristown, New Jersey.
