George Blakely was originally from Haverstraw, New York, but moved to Split Rock, New Jersey at some point in his early years. He was mustered into the 7th New Jersey Volunteers, Company K on October 21, 1861.

While we have no documentation of the battles he was involved in, records state that he contracted typhoid and died at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York on July 28, 1862. He was 41, and left behind his wife, Sarah Blakely, and their 7 children.

He is buried in Cypress Hills National Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
