Daniel Hart served with the 7th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry in several officer positions. While we don’t know exactly when he enlisted, he was made the Captain of Company ‘C’ on Sept 5, 1862. He was later promoted to Major on Feb 23, 1865, and then Lieutenant Colonel on April 9, 1865. He was also the inspector for the 3rd Dvision Corps.

During his enlistment, he married Ellen Lammond in the 7th’s camp. Their nuptials were featured in the April edition of Harpers Weekly in 1863. Hart’s wedding was also documented by Pvt. Heyward Emmell in his diary.

After the war, Hart served as commanding officer at Fort Quitman and Fort Stockton, Texas. He was later brevetted for gallant & meritorious service for actions at Gettysburg, and for gallant & meritorious service for action during the Battle of the Wilderness.

He died in 1878, and while originally buried at Fort Stockton Cemetery, Texas, his final resting place is in the San Antonio National Cemetery, Texas.
