We represent a landing party from the USS Ellis (circa 1862). Landing parties were used to secure and forage enemy beach positions, attack forts, give cover to land forces and deploy as skirmishers in a land battle.
Ensign Jim Ley
|
Ensign Jim Ley commands the landing party. Second in command is Boatswains Mate Joe Manna. We field up to a dozen recruits, including a midshipman, a powdermonkey, and a United States Marine detachment. The landing party also employs the use of a cohorn mortar and is skilled in its operation. The crew is interested in the use of a small boat to augment the landing party. A Navy flag is being researched for the general use during living histories, parades, and reenactments.

Currently the crew of the USS Ellis, and it's Marine Detachment, are also members of one of the other 2nd NJ Brigade units. Although our US Navy impression is an alternate, at the Brigade's request, will do the Navy impression. Money can be acquired for the ship's company fund using the bounty money received for the mortar at various events. Besides the US Navy, our US Marine impression is encouraged for the landing party, as between 1861 and 1865 the Marines made over 1000 beach landings.
