The Second Regiment of New Jersey Calvary is a reactivated western theater Civil War Cavalry unit formed of both mounted and dismounted members. We portray federal volunteer cavalry as they fought on horseback and as dismounted skirmishers. When dismounted, our horses are picketed, as all good cavalry skirmisher's mounts were, out of the line of fire and out of the sight of the enemy. Our dismounted brethren are integrated into unit in every way possible and are essential to our impression. We understand that not all cavalrymen can can afford or, for whatever reason, manage a horse. We welcome cavalry reenactors on two as well as four legs and we do not compromise or sacrifice authenticity as a result. All of our members must ride or look as if they have just dismounted and sent their horses to the rear. We all make our bedrolls like cavalrymen and pack our possessions for horseback. Both mounted and dismounted troopers camp together and portray a wholly accurate picture of Civil War cavalry fighting to the public.

The 2nd NJ Cavalry All field commands, in both the mounted and dismounted platoons, are by bugle call. All maneuvers in the field are made in double ranks in accordance with Poinsett's Tactics. Our troopers carry Sharps, Smiths, Spencer, and Burnside carbines, as well as 44 caliber Remington and 36 or 44 caliber Colt or Walker revolvers and 1833 dragoon or 1860 cavalry sabers. USV firearm and mounted safety protocols are supported. 1861 Army mounted services uniform regulations and horse furniture and tack requirements are closely observed.

The 2nd NJ is currently operating with between 10 and 12 horses in the field at each of our events and are mustering approximately the same number of dismounted skirmishers. With our associate organizations, the 15th New York and the 18th Pennsylvania, we are a substantial cavalry unit, operating throughout the Northeast. The company is commanded by Lt. Jim Ley, with the experienced and invaluable mounted assistance of First Sergeant Joe Manna. Our skirmishers are commanded in the field by First Lieutenant John Napoliello and Sergeant Jim Guarinello.
